Healthy Body, Healthy Business

Healthy Body, Healthy Business:

Mindset Shift You Can’t Afford to Ignore

Here’s the truth, boss: you can’t run a powerhouse business on an empty tank. You can have the slick branding, the strategy sessions, even the five-year plan — but if your health is in the gutter, your business will be too. Period.

Most entrepreneurs don’t even realize how much their physical and mental health is quietly sabotaging their growth. They think being tired all the time or running on stress is just “part of the grind.” Wrong. That grind is grinding you down, and it’s costing you money, clarity, and opportunities.

Burnout

When Your Health Tanks, So Does Your Business

Let’s call it like it is:

  • Dragging through your day? That’s not just exhaustion, that’s lost productivity and creativity.

  • Brain fog calling the shots? Strategic decisions don’t come from a cloudy mind.

  • Stress running the show? Burnout isn’t a badge of honor — it’s a business killer.

You may not even connect the dots, but an unhealthy body and an unhealthy mindset are directly affecting your bottom line.

Strong Mind + Strong Body = Strong Business

Now let’s flip the script. When you commit to your health, your business will notice — fast.

  • Energy becomes your superpower. Suddenly, systems, strategies, and events feel doable, not draining.

  • Creativity flows. With a clear head, you’ll start spotting opportunities and thinking outside the box like never before.

  • Confidence skyrockets. When you feel good in your own skin, it shows up in every pitch, partnership, and client interaction.

  • Resilience builds. A healthy mindset makes bouncing back from challenges faster and easier.

Bottom line: A strong business starts with a strong you.

Designing Your “Business Health Plan”

You wouldn’t ignore your business finances — so stop ignoring your business health. Here’s what a simple but powerful plan looks like:

  1. Fuel your body wisely. Ditch the crash-and-burn cycle of sugar and caffeine. Eat for energy, not just convenience.

  2. Move with purpose. Exercise isn’t optional — it’s the switch that turns on focus, stamina, and drive.

  3. Protect your rest. Sleep is not lazy; it’s a strategy. Rested brains make sharper decisions.

  4. Guard your mindset. Set boundaries. Take breaks. Fill your cup. A business built on burnout won’t last.

The Final Word

Think of your health as the most valuable system in your business. You can automate emails, outsource tasks, and streamline services, but there is no replacing you.

When your body and mind are aligned and energized, you’ll show up as the visionary your business actually needs — not the exhausted version just trying to make it through the day.

Your health isn’t a luxury. It’s Your edge. Protect it, invest in it, and watch Your business glow.

Gender Equality Week in Canada: What Can We Do Better?

Gender Equality Week in Canada -

What Can We Do Better?

Author: Darlene Clattenburg

September 21, 2025

Every year, from September 21 to 27, Canada observes Gender Equality Week—a time to reflect on the progress we’ve made, the challenges that remain, and the steps we can take, individually and collectively, to close the gap.

Equality is not just a buzzword; it’s the foundation for stronger families, healthier communities, and thriving businesses. Yet, even in 2025, we’re still facing barriers. Women—especially women of color, Indigenous women, newcomers, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities—are often underrepresented in leadership roles, underpaid in the workforce, and undervalued in industries where they are the backbone.

So, what can we do better?

1. Normalize Equal Pay and Transparency:

Equal work deserves equal pay. Sounds simple, right? But wage gaps persist. Businesses—big and small—can commit to wage transparency, regularly reviewing pay scales to ensure fairness. As consumers, we can support organizations that openly value pay equity.

2. Invest in Women Entrepreneurs:

Canada is full of ambitious women starting small businesses, from tech to beauty to service industries. These entrepreneurs often face greater challenges accessing funding or mentorship. Supporting their ventures—whether by shopping local, booking their services, or recommending them to others—goes beyond a transaction. It’s an investment in gender equality.

3. Encourage Work-Life Balance for All Genders:

Caregiving shouldn’t be a women-only responsibility. Normalizing parental leave for fathers and encouraging flexible work for all helps dismantle the old mindset that domestic duties are “women’s work.” Equality in the workplace starts at home.

4. Create Safer Work and Community Spaces:

Gender equality includes feeling safe—in workplaces, schools, and communities. That means taking harassment seriously, believing survivors, and building cultures of respect. True equality cannot exist without safety and dignity.

5. Mentor, Train, and Lift Each Other Up:

One of the most powerful ways to support equality is through mentorship. Sharing knowledge, opening doors, and pulling others up with you helps build a future where leadership looks more diverse. As the saying goes: When women support women, incredible things happen.

6. Speak Up and Stay Informed:

Equality doesn’t happen in silence. We need to question outdated systems, call out bias when we see it, and advocate for inclusive policies. Education and awareness fuel action.

Why it matters:
Gender equality is not just a “women’s issue.” It’s a Canadian issue. A human issue. A stronger, fairer, and more prosperous future depends on it. During Gender Equality Week, let’s move beyond hashtags and lip service and ask ourselves:

👉 What can I do—today, in my home, in my workplace, in my community—to help level the playing field?

Because the truth is, change doesn’t happen in one week of the year. It happens every day we choose equality over silence

Spray Tan Safety Tips: A Professional’s Guide for Client & Spray Tan Artist

Spray Tan Safety Tips: A Professional’s Guide for Mobile Artists
Safety Checklist

Author | Darlene Clattenburg | Liquid Sunshine Spray Tan Society | August 2, 2024

Spray tanning has skyrocketed in popularity as the safe way to achieve that perfect glow. But whether you’re in a studio or bringing the tan directly to your client’s home, safety should always come first. Mobile spray tan artists face unique challenges, but with the right precautions, you can deliver flawless results while keeping everyone healthy. Let’s dive into the essentials of spray tan safety for professionals on the move.

Understanding the Basics of Spray Tan Safety

Whether you’re a seasoned spray tan pro or just starting your mobile service, these core tips keep your clients happy and their skin protected:

1. Skin Preparation

Before any tanning session, advise clients to exfoliate thoroughly. Removing dead skin cells creates a smooth canvas, ensuring an even, streak-free tan.

2. Protective Measures

Both you and your client should wear goggles and masks to prevent inhalation or contact with the tanning solution. Safety is glamorous too!

3. Ventilation

For mobile spray tanning, proper airflow is critical. Even in small home spaces, portable fans or open windows can help disperse the tanning mist, keeping the air clean and breathable.

Choosing the Right Products for Safe Tanning

Quality products are the backbone of safe, professional spray tanning. Keep these in mind:

  • Ingredient Check: Opt for tanning solutions free from harsh chemicals and allergens. Natural, skin-friendly ingredients reduce the risk of irritation.

  • Patch Testing: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin to ensure your client won’t have an adverse reaction.

Mobile Spray Tan Safety Tips

Mobile spray tan artists face extra considerations since you’re setting up in different environments. Here’s how to stay safe on the go:

  1. Sanitize Equipment and Space: Carry disinfectants and wipes to clean spray guns, hoses, and any surfaces your client may touch.

  2. Secure Your Work Area: Protect floors, furniture, and fabrics with portable tarps or disposable sheets to prevent accidental stains.

  3. Control the Mist: Use adjustable spray booths or shields when possible to keep the solution contained and prevent overspray in confined spaces.

  4. Client Comfort: Make sure there’s enough ventilation and room to move, especially in smaller homes or apartments.

Post-Treatment Care: Keeping the Glow Safe

The session doesn’t end when the spray gun shuts off. Post-care is crucial for skin health and tan longevity:

  • Hydration: Encourage clients to moisturize daily. Well-hydrated skin keeps the tan smooth and long-lasting.

  • Avoid Irritants: Tell clients to skip hot showers, saunas, and vigorous exercise immediately after the tan.

  • Sun Protection: Remind clients that spray tans do not protect against UV rays. SPF is still a must.

Why Safety Equals Stunning Results:

Safety isn’t just a checklist—it’s the foundation of your professionalism. By following strict safety protocols, selecting high-quality products, and emphasizing proper aftercare, mobile spray tan artists can deliver safe, beautiful, and repeatable results every time.

Remember: safety first, glow second!

By embracing these spray tanning safety measures—especially in a mobile setting—you not only protect your clients’ skin but also elevate your reputation as a skilled, responsible, and sought-after spray tan artist.

Now Let's Talk About You!- The Mobile Spray Tan Artist:

  • Tell another person your clients address, time of appointment and expected finish time. You will then contact that person with the appropriate "Code Word" that you are safe.
  • If you do not use the "Code Word" - Your person moves into "Plan Mode".
  • Place your car keys in a spot that will be easy to grab - don't worry about equipment - it is replaceable - You are not!   [I still do this]
  • Preferably, keep your phone on you. Great to take a before & after picture. Turn on your phones "Safety App". Press record until you feel safe.
  • Park your car in a way that it is easy and fast to leave. Hook up a 360 camera [if possible]
  • Have a person travel with you to your appointment.
  • I am including a MOBILE SPRAY TAN SAFETY CHECKLIST.

How Stress, Anxiety & Mental Health Affect Spray Tan Results: Pro Skin Insights for Spray Tan Artists

Author| Darlene Clattenburg | July 26, 2025  | Sunless Sessions Blog

Overview:

Stress, anxiety, and mental health fluctuations trigger physiological changes in the body that directly impact the skin — and consequently, spray tan results. Understanding these effects helps professional spray tan artists anticipate challenges and apply strategies to ensure even, long-lasting tans.

1. Hormonal Effects on Skin and Spray Tan Quality:

  • Cortisol Release: Stress increases cortisol, altering sebum production and skin hydration.

    • Impact on spray tan: Excess oil or dry skin can prevent DHA from developing evenly, leading to streaks or uneven color.

  • Adrenaline Release: Causes temporary vasoconstriction and increased sweating.

    • Impact on spray tan: Reduced blood flow can make skin appear dull, affecting tan absorption, while sweating can dilute or wash away DHA in moisture-prone areas.

2. Skin pH Imbalance:

  • Stress can shift skin pH, making it more acidic or alkaline.

  • Impact on spray tan: DHA develops best on balanced skin; pH fluctuations may cause uneven color, orange tones, or patchiness.

3. Circulation and Skin Health:

  • Stress-related vasoconstriction limits nutrient and oxygen delivery to the skin.

  • Impact on spray tan: Skin may appear dull or blotchy, potentially affecting tan uniformity.

4. Increased Sweat and Oil Production:

  • Nervous sweating commonly occurs in underarms, palms, scalp, and back of knees.

  • Impact on spray tan: Excess moisture can block DHA adhesion, causing lighter spots or uneven coverage.

5. Skin Barrier and Sensitivity:

  • Chronic stress can weaken the skin barrier, increasing redness, irritation, or sensitivity.

  • Impact on spray tan: Tan may adhere unevenly to inflamed areas, and flakiness can shorten the tan’s lifespan.

Pro Strategies for Stress-Related Skin Challenges:

  1. Client Prep: Encourage exfoliation and hydration pre-tan to normalize pH and remove skin barriers.

  2. Barrier Protection: Apply thin protective layers to high-sweat zones (underarms, palms, hairline).

  3. Hydration Support: Recommend clients drink water before and after their spray tan to maintain skin elasticity.

  4. Calming Environment: Use soothing scents, music, or deep-breathing techniques to reduce client stress, which supports skin health.

  5. Customized Aftercare: Advise gentle moisturizing and avoiding friction on sensitive areas to preserve tan longevity.

Key Takeaway:

Stress, anxiety, and mental health fluctuations do not prevent a spray tan from developing but can introduce variables that impact absorption, color consistency, and longevity. By understanding these effects and implementing professional strategies, spray tan artists can consistently deliver flawless, long-lasting results.
